Booker to Play in Brazil

The GMHBA Ballarat Miners have received notice that American Import Roy Booker will continue his basketball career in Brazil playing for Bauru Basket. Baura play in the Novo Basquette Brasil (NBB) which is the Brazilian Premier Professional Men’s Basketball League.

Booker has played for the GMHBA Miners since 2014 where his impressive season ended early due to an achilles injury. Booker finished season 2014 with 15 games and an average of 28.6 points and 6.9 rebounds.

Booker returned from injury in 2015 and showed he was a shooting machine, averaging 25 points a game and 5.2 assists. Booker scored 30 or more points in five games with his highest tally being 36 points against North West Tasmania in the second game of the Tasmanian road trip.

Booker in his third season for the Miners was again impressive. He missed the first game of the season and then played in every game until Round 15 where he suffered an injury early in the game against Kilsyth and was unable to return for the remainder of the season. However Booker still managed to average 25.1 points and 4.4 assists per game

Booker earned the All SEABL team honours in all three years with the Miners and was the Ballarat Miners Ray Borner MVP in 2015.

Basketball Ballarat acknowledges the contribution Roy has made to not only the Miners program but also to the wider Ballarat community. Basketball Ballarat’s Melissa Thomas said “Roy has been an active member of our community conducting school visits and working with the junior elite players” Thomas continued “because of his great work off the court he drew crowds to watch the Miners and we thank him for all his efforts.”

Basketball Ballarat is in its final stages of its 2016 review and once it is completed it will look to planning 2017.
