Exies White 12GA comeback falls short, as Drummo holds on

Drummo Dragons 12 Girls A hold on to a narrow 30-29 victory despite a brave comeback from Exies Acmy White. Drummo’s Laila Lappin lead the victors with 11 points in a well balanced scoring output for the victors, whilst Sarah Guirguis (12) and Taylah Grace (10) were the high scorers for Exies White.

Exies Acmy came out of the blocks firing with a steal from Holly McSparron resulting in a basket to get the scoring underway. Taylah Grace quickly followed up with a made jump shot, and before they knew it Drummo had quickly found themselves in a deficit. It was until 10 minutes into the match that Drummo made its first field goal, making scores 7-3 in Exies White’s favour. Post time-out, Drummo quickly notched up a gear and ended the half on a 12-4 run, largely to the credit of Layla Lappin who ended the first half with 6 points to her name. Drummo took a 15-11 lead into the major break.

Drummo began the second half the same way they finished the first quickly getting a score on the board. Sarah Guirguis quickly came back with two points of her own, proving that Exies White were in the fight. Drummo quickly extended their lead to as much as 10 points, largely due to the great interior defence of Laila Lappin, blocking and altering numerous Exies White shot attempts. Drummo proved that great defence sets up offence with Laila’s impact defensively ultimately resulting in easy scores for the likes of Catriona Harricks and her teammates.

Despite the lead staying between 7 and 10 for majority of the second half, Exies White finally kicked into gear. With 8 quick points within a two-minute span Exies White cut the margin back to one point with 2 minutes to play. A nervous final two minutes by both teams resulted in no further scores, and Drummo gripping onto the victory by the narrowest of margins.
